Villages allure many of us with their simplicity and closeness to a more peaceful, natural rhythm of life. Cities usually start as villages, and we can see the longing for a simpler life reflected in a lot of contemporary urban settings - from cafes and parks to workshops and farmer markets. My project topic is a study on how these roots are represented in different countries around the world. While Europe has a broad and often cliched representation in books and on the internet, Africa's villages have a colorful yet scarcer manifestation in popular culture.
You are about to see illustrations of villages in 13 cultures along the 42nd meridian, from Finland to the South pole, right past Sofia, where I live.
